EV Charger Installation in Mackay

From a 7 kW wall-charger in the carport to fleet depot chargers — what's involved, what it costs, how solar changes the maths.

TL;DR

  • Home 7 kW charger: $1,800-$2,800 installed.
  • Three-phase 22 kW: $2,500-$4,200 — only needed for fast overnight or fleet.
  • Solar-integrated charging = effectively free fuel during daylight.
  • Load management device required for most Ergon connections > 20 A.

What charger do I actually need?

For most Mackay homeowners, a 7 kW single-phase wall charger is plenty. Overnight, it adds 40-50 km of range per hour — more than enough for typical daily commutes.

Example: Tesla Model Y on 7 kW charger, 10 hours overnight = ~400 km added. That's a full week of driving for most Mackay households.

Install process

  1. Switchboard check — do you have spare slots and adequate main breaker rating?
  2. Cable run — from switchboard to carport/garage (cost scales with distance).
  3. RCD / RCBO installation — mandatory Type A or Type B depending on charger.
  4. Load management device (where needed) to prevent main breaker tripping during simultaneous A/C + EV + oven use.
  5. Ergon notification (automatic for grid-tied; some connections need approval).
  6. Commissioning, test certificate, registration.

Solar + EV — the killer combo

A solar-aware EV charger (Wattpilot, Zappi, Powerwall+Wall Connector) watches your solar export and ramps charging to match. In practice, this means:

  • 10-15 kWh of midday charging for free on sunny days.
  • Effective "fuel cost" of $0.00/km for solar-charged portion.
  • No surplus export wasted at poor FiT rates.

Commercial & fleet EV charging

Workplace, depot and destination charging need load management and often DC fast-charge. We design commercial EV projects for Mackay businesses including schools, hotels and fleet operators. See our electrical services page.

FAQs

Can I install my own EV charger?

No. Hardwired EV chargers must be installed by a licensed electrician in QLD. DIY installation is illegal and voids insurance.

Do EV chargers need approval from Ergon?

Sometimes. Hardwired chargers above 20 A (7 kW+) typically require notification. Three-phase 22 kW chargers often need formal approval and may trigger a service upgrade.

What about cyclone/storm damage?

Wall chargers are IP55 rated and designed for outdoor use. We recommend indoor or sheltered mounting and proper earth-leakage protection for reliability in Mackay's weather.
