Recommended system sizes

Residential

  • 1-2 people, modest usage: 6.6 kW
  • 3-4 people, pool or A/C: 10 kW
  • 5+ people, EV or heavy daytime usage: 13.3 kW + battery

Commercial (daytime usage)

  • Small retail / cafe (~150 kWh/day): 30-50 kW
  • Workshop / light industrial (~500 kWh/day): 80-120 kW
  • Cold-storage / refrigeration (~1,500 kWh/day): 150-200 kW + battery
  • Mining services / dewatering: 200 kW+ (three-phase)

Ergon Tariff 12E (Time of Use)

Peak (4pm-9pm daily): ~$0.57 per kWh
Off-peak (9pm-4pm): ~$0.23 per kWh
Feed-in tariff: 8-12 cents/kWh (retailer dependent)

Because solar production drops to near zero after 4pm, households on 12E without a battery still pay peak rates on evening consumption. A 10-13 kWh battery typically covers the full 4pm-9pm window for an average Mackay household.

Rebates available (2026)

  1. STC (Small-scale Technology Certificates): Federal upfront rebate applied at point of sale for systems up to 100 kW. Value reduces each year until scheme ends in 2030.
  2. Federal Battery Booster: Up to 30% off installed battery cost for eligible home batteries. Launched 2025.
  3. QLD Battery Booster (state): Additional means-tested support for eligible QLD households. Check current caps on the QLD Government Energy website.
  4. Feed-in tariff: Voluntary retailer-set (not a subsidy). Ergon Retail offers 8-12 cents/kWh for residential exports.

Frequently asked questions

Is solar worth it in Mackay in 2026?

Yes for most households. Mackay averages 5.3 peak sun hours per day — one of the best in Australia. A 6.6 kW system produces ~9,600 kWh/year, typically offsetting 55-75% of an average household bill. Payback is usually 3.5-5 years, with a useful life of 25 years.

How long does an install take?

Residential 6.6-13.3 kW: typically one day on-site. Commercial 30-100 kW: 3-7 business days. DNSP approval from Ergon adds 2-6 weeks for residential and 4-12 weeks for commercial before work starts.

Do you subcontract installations?

No. All solar and electrical installations are delivered by our in-house Mackay-based team. Every job is signed off by a CEC-accredited installer and a QLD-licensed electrician on our payroll.

Do I need a battery to benefit from solar?

On Tariff 11 (flat rate) a battery is optional and payback is longer. On Tariff 12E (Time of Use) a battery typically pays back in 7-9 years and transforms the economics of solar because it shifts midday production to cover the 4pm-9pm peak.

Do you offer finance?

Yes. We partner with accredited green loan providers for 0% interest plans on eligible solar and battery packages. Ask our team for current options.

What happens if my system fails?

We diagnose remotely first (via the monitoring platform) then send a technician if needed. Residential call-outs under our 10-year workmanship guarantee are free for warranty items. Emergency electrical is separately billed.
