SOLAR IN AIRLIE BEACH

Solar built for the Whitsunday coast and salt air

Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsundays, a tourism and marine-services town wrapped around Coral Sea Marina and the coast. That setting is beautiful and brutal on hardware. Constant salt spray corrodes budget panel frames, connectors and roof fixings, so on coastal Airlie, Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket jobs we spec marine-grade, corrosion-resistant components as standard.

This is cyclone country. Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie crossed as a Category 4 system near Airlie Beach in March 2017 and flattened a lot of the town, and the whole coast sits in cyclone Wind Region C. Every array we mount here is racked and fixed to cyclonic wind ratings, with penetrations flashed to keep water out through the wet season.

A big share of Airlie's homes are holiday lets and second homes, often sitting empty between bookings. Battery backup keeps the fridge and essentials running through the outages that come with storm season, and remote monitoring lets absentee owners keep an eye on a system from Brisbane or beyond. For hosts running short stays we also fit EV chargers and efficient air conditioning that guests actually use.

We are Mackay-owned with crews working across the Whitsundays, so the same team quotes, installs and comes back for service. Nothing gets handed to a subcontractor once the deposit clears.

Grid notes

Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday coast connect to the Ergon Energy network for regional Queensland. Ergon requires a connection application and approval before a solar or battery system can be switched on and export, and can set export limits based on your supply and system size. We handle the Ergon application, metering and paperwork so absentee and holiday-home owners are not left chasing it.

Built for Airlie Beach

What makes solar here different

  • Salt-spray corrosion from the coast

Marina and beachfront air at Airlie, Cannonvale and Jubilee Pocket is relentless on metal, eating cheap frames, connectors and fixings within a few seasons. We use marine-grade, corrosion-resistant hardware so a coastal system is not quietly rusting itself apart.

  • Cyclone Region C after Debbie

Debbie made landfall here as a Category 4 in 2017, and the coast is cyclone Wind Region C. Racking, roof fixings and penetrations are engineered and certified for cyclonic gusts and flashed watertight, which is not where you cut corners in the Whitsundays.

  • Holiday homes and storm outages

Around a third of Airlie dwellings sit empty between bookings, and storm season takes the grid down. We pair solar with battery backup and remote monitoring so essentials keep running and absentee owners can check the system without being on site.

Really good value. I wanted to add a battery to my setup and shopped around a fair bit, and Brad came back with the best price out of everyone I asked. No pushy sales, just a straight good deal and the job done properly. Happy customer, would recommend them to anyone in Mackay looking at solar or batteries.

Fast and easy from start to finish. I just needed a battery added and they sorted it out really quickly, much faster than I expected after hearing how long other companies take. Brad was great, clear and helpful the whole way through. Highly recommend them if you are in Mackay.

Could not be happier with my solar installation. I got quotes from several companies, since there are loads of them around and the market is competitive, and NPSolar honestly gave me the best price by far. I had also read plenty of reviews of other companies and they all seemed to take months to actually get the job done. NPSolar installed my 14 panels and batteries in a single week, at the best price, which felt almost too good to be true. Huge thanks to Brad, who was friendly, talked me through all my questions and made the whole process easy. If you are in Mackay and looking at solar, definitely get a quote from them.

FAQs about solar in Airlie Beach

Quick answers about response time, paperwork and system sizing for Airlie Beach.

Standard panels degrade faster within 5 km of the coast (corrosion on the frame and junction box). We spec salt-mist-rated panels (IEC 61701 Severity 6 certification, all Tier-1 brands carry this) and 304 stainless mounting hardware for any Whitsundays job. Adds about 2 to 4 percent to material cost, lasts a decade longer.

Coastal homes need cleaning every 6 to 9 months versus annual inland. Salt deposits, sea spray and dust from the Bruce Highway build up faster. We offer biannual cleaning plans specifically for Whitsundays clients at a discount.

Cannonvale, Cannon Valley, Jubilee Pocket, Mount Marlow and Conway: yes, same price as Airlie. Hamilton Island, Daydream and Hayman: case by case (barge access and on-island accommodation has a separate quote line). Long Island and South Molle: yes, residential and small-commercial only.

Tropical north QLD homes with reverse-cycle aircon running 8+ months/year typically need 10 to 13.2 kW, not the 6.6 kW that suits Brisbane. We size against your last 12 months of bill data, not against marketing brochures.

Whitsunday Regional Council generally treats residential solar as 'minor work' and doesn't require a separate DA. Heritage-listed properties (rare in Airlie itself, more common on the islands) may need a Building Approval. We check the title and zoning before quoting.

No. Install year-round. The mounting is cyclone-rated, so a panel array installed in November is no more at risk than one installed in May. The only thing we do delay is final commissioning if a category 3+ event is forecast within 5 days, for crew safety, not equipment risk.
