What grows on Mackay roofs
Mackay is humid all year, and two thirds of its rain falls between December and March, on 66 years of Bureau of Meteorology records. Glass that stays damp and warm grows things.
Lichen and fungus start as small pale spots and spread. They hold on to the glass, so rain runs over them and leaves them where they are.
Each patch blocks the light to the cells underneath it, and it keeps blocking it until somebody takes it off.

What the thermal scan shows
The camera shows heat. On a healthy panel no cell stands out from the ones around it. Cells running hotter than their neighbours show up as bright blocks, and the report tells you which panel and where.
A hot cell can mean shade, dirt stuck to the glass, a crack, or a bypass diode that is conducting or has failed. Some of that the clean fixes on the day, some is worth a technician looking at, and some is nothing to worry about.
It cannot see everything. A thermal camera shows heat, not what is causing it, and the report has a section called what a thermal camera cannot tell you.

Straight answers
Is it always worth paying for?
No. On a lot of Mackay roofs a clean wins back so little that on a 6.6 kW system it is worth somewhere between twelve and sixty dollars a year, depending on whether you use it in the house or export it. No price makes that add up. Bird droppings are the exception, because they are opaque and create hot spots that can pull a whole string down. Do you stand on the panels?
Never. Walking on the glass causes micro-cracks that do not show up for years and then show up as output nobody can explain. We work the pole so that nothing takes weight on the modules.
Will cleaning void my panel warranty?
Manufacturer warranties are what they are, and we are not going to tell you we have read every one of them. What we can tell you is what we do: water only unless you add the specialist solar soap, no pressure washer and nobody standing on the glass. If your panel maker asks for water only, we skip the soap and do not charge for it. The report is your record of it if an insurer ever asks.
How often should panels be cleaned in Mackay?
For most homes once a year, and for plenty of them less than that. Within about five kilometres of the water salt builds faster, and near cane that gets burnt or under a cockatoo run, more often again. If yours is one of those, the crew will tell you on the day.
What if you find a nest under my panels?
You get a straight answer about what is up there. Cleaning the mess above a nest only buys you a few months, so bird mesh is its own job with its own access gear and its own price. No obligation either way.
Do I need to be home?
